ZDS has teamed up with a private investor to acquire property in Palm Springs, CA. We found a gorgeous 1/2 acre lot just off the Indian Canyon Golf Course, tucked between the Andreas Hills and the San Jacinto Mountains.

ZDS wishes Ashley Richardson, Senior Project Manager, and Kizzy, Chairdog of the Board, a very Happy Birthday! How great that they share the same day. Ashley and Kizzy blew out the candles on their delicious chocolate cake from Bakery Nouveau together, then we opened presents and went out for Happy Hour. Here’s hoping this next year will grant them all their birthday wishes.

We are only a few days away from Martin Luther King’s birthday and from Barack Obama’s inauguration. As we look to shift from the old polluting way to a new era, we ask ourselves what our professional responsibility to promote change is and how we can contribute to our society through our practice of architecture. We are inspired by President Elect Barack Obama to renew our commitment to social and environmental sustainability.

ZDS has fallen in love with the simple and powerful beauty of Omer Arbel’s Bocci Balls. These lights are made of cast glass, seamed, spheres with frosted cylindrical voids, into which a halogen light bulb is inserted. The pendants look wonderfully pure and poetic singularly, but it is in clusters that their effect multiplies, creating the impression of many shiny stars in the black night, or of tiny candles encased in floating spheres of water. The elemental quality of these hand crafted allows the imagination to soar.

On November 13th the ZDS project team was in Washington DC for an open house at the Washington Wellness Insitute (WWI). Family, friends, clients, and staff gathered to celebrate the project, and to meet the architect and her colleagues. May Zahr, the artist known as “Nanoo” attended the open house too. Her evocative abstract paintings have been selected to complement the minimal space. It was an enjoyable and exciting night for all as Suzanne Zahr Fleming, armed with a glass of champagne, gave guided tours of the space explaining “what made the design green”. Suzanne wore a handmade wrap made from recycled materials by Seattle based fashion designer Luly Yang. There was much talk and celebration in a special place created by a unique set of people.

This 185-acre master planned sustainable community offers new homebuyers the possibility to build modern homes in a natural landscape, made up of marine and mountainous views. Through this special design concept clients can tailor the aesthetics of their house from its core to its extremities.

ZDS chose Arghand Skin Nourishing Soaps and Pebbles as holiday gifts this year. These polished hand-milled soaps, shaped as river stones are beautiful to the touch for their irregularity, wonderful to smell due to their natural essential oils, and so nourishing to the skin that they can be used to wash the face. Each soap pebble comes gently wrapped in a strip of silk from turbans woven in the South Western Afghan town of Herat. We have fallen in love with the luxurious and soothing richness of these soaps from Arghand. The Afghanistan-based cooperative was founded by NPR reporter and journalist Sarah Chayes. Since we first saw her impacting interview on the Bill Moyer’s show, Sarah Chayes has become an energizing source of inspiration for ZDS. Continue Reading |
